The Birdcage (Widescreen Edition) [VHS]

The Birdcage (Widescreen Edition) [VHS] Review

See more picture

The great improvisational comedy team of Mike Nichols and Elaine May reunited to (respectively) direct and write this update of the French comedy La Cage Aux Folles. Robin Williams stars as a gay Miami nightclub owner who is forced to play it straight and ask his drag-queen partner (Nathan Lane) to hide out when Williams's son invites his prospective--and highly conservative--in-laws and fiancée to a meet-and-greet dinner party. Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest play the straight-laced senator and his wife, and Calista Flockhart (from television's Ally McBeal) plays their daughter in a culture-clash with outrageous consequences. May's witty screenplay incorporates some pointed observations about the political landscape of the 1990s and takes a sensitive approach to the comedy's underlying drama. Topping off the action is Hank Azaria in a scene-stealing role as Williams's and Lane's flamboyant housekeeper, "Agador Spartacus." --Jeff Shannon

Earlier this week, President Clinton announced a new anti-drug plan and named General Barry McCaffrey, America's most highly decorated soldier, point man. McCaffrey is the director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy and he talks to Charlie about an increasingly urgent problem in America and how he intends to approach solving it. Then, Nathan Lane is on to talk about his simultaneous Hollywood and Broadway successes. He is currently starring in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum on Broadway and he can also be seen, starring opposite Robin Williams, in The Birdcage. Finally, in 1954, Jim Wright was elected to the first of 18 consecutive terms in Congress. He has known every American president from Eisenhower through Bush. He is on to share a bit about American History and offer his insight into the 1996 presidential election.

Big Bird Cage [VHS]

Big Bird Cage [VHS] Review

See more picture

Pam Grier and Sid Haig stole the show in Jack Hill's Filipino-women-in-prison hit The Big Doll House, and they pretty much power this superior action-packed semi-sequel as a South American Bonnie-and-Clyde team. The revolutionaries with mercenary hearts decide to liberate the inmates of a jungle women's prison at the urging of their lonely army of single men. All the conventions are there--scantily clad women, a deranged warden (so evil he kicks a puppy in his first scene!), catfights, the occasional kinky punishment, and of course all those showers. But Hill softens the usual sadistic formula with tongue-in-cheek humor (Haig infiltrates the all-gay prison-guard squad by shamelessly flirting with the captain) and a zippy pace. Though not quite as empowering as Caged Heat, The Big Bird Cage remains one of the most energized and entertaining women-in-prison films ever made. --Sean Axmaker

The Adventures Of Priscilla Queen of the Desert [NON-USA FORMAT, PAL REGION 2, IMPORT]

The Adventures Of Priscilla Queen of the Desert [NON-USA FORMAT, PAL REGION 2, IMPORT] Review

Format Disclaimer: PAL format is used outside of North America and is not compatible with standard DVD players used in the US and Canada. Pal compatible or multi-system DVD player is necessary for proper playback. Synopsis: Stephan Elliott (EYE OF THE BEHOLDER) wrote and directed this tale of two drag queens and a transsexual that embark on a road trip to a remote resort town in the Australian desert on a bus christened Priscilla. When Anthony Tick'/Mitzi (Hugo Weaving) is invited to perform in Alice Springs, he recruits flamboyant young stud Adam/Felicia (Guy Pearce) and the legendary, refined Bernadette (Terence Stamp) to join him. Mitzi, however, fails to disclose one important fact to his friends: his wife is the one who invited them to Alice Springs. With one big secret about to be revealed and another one up his sleeve, Mitzi is a little stressed. With long hours on the road ahead of them, the trio lip-synchs campy songs on the bus, creates fabulous costumes, and meets a multitude of colourful characters along the way. They party with friendly aborigines, are confronted by judgmental townspeople who are averse to drag queens, and meet Bob (Bill Hunter), a warm hearted mechanic and drag fan who joins them for the last leg of their trip when their bus breaks down in the middle of nowhere. Fantastic costumes and fabulous makeup abound, and fine performances are delivered all around. But perhaps most important are the implicit messages that families come in all forms, that friends can make a family, and that love really knows no boundaries.

Route 66 - The Complete Second Season

Route 66 - The Complete Second Season Review

Route 66 - The Complete Second Season Feature

  • The original "road trip" drama, Route 66 (1960-64), one of the most acclaimed series to emerge from '60s television, returns for a star-studded second season in Route 66: Complete Second Season Television Series. Now you can own all 32 episodes of season two of this treasured televisionic, digitally remastered for the highest quality picture and audio possible in the original, full
Buckle up for a complete season of one of television’s very best dramatic series. You may be tempted to want to pull an all-nighter and drive straight through all 32 episodes, but it’s best to take frequent rest stops to fully enjoy this trip into the heart of America. Well-heeled Tod Stiles (Martin Milner) and Hell's Kitchen-bred Buz Murdoch (George Maharis) are back on the road, still "looking and moving" to find "a place where we really fit." Until then, as Buz proclaims, "It’s not the getting there that counts, it’s the going." And these cats go. Speedways and turnpikes? They’re nowhere. In Route 66, what usually happens is that Tod and Buz happen upon someone in crisis, like a Jewish boy who loses faith after his father is murdered, a terminally ill woman, and a mysterious woman who steps off a bus wearing a creepy mask. Most of the time, Tod and Buz are in this together, but sometimes, there is tension when only one insists on getting involved. "Can’t you leave one tornado for the weather bureau?" an annoyed Tod asks Buz in "Love is a Skinny Kid," one of the season’s best episodes. Route 66 was one of the best written shows on television (series creator and future Oscar-winner Sterling Silliphant wrote many of the second season scripts). The hipster dialogue keeps the Beat, but it's the compassionate stories that really drive the series. Tod and Buz are audience surrogates who experience America's diverse communities, from New England shipbuilders to a Midwestern Polish family. Route 66 is on the side of authentic craftsmanship, cultural traditions, and mom and pop restaurants where you can get "soup, salad, entrée, fruit cocktail, two vegetables, the whole truth and nothing but the truth" for .19. This season gets extra mileage from its premium guest stars, including Ethel Waters in her Emmy-nominated performance as a dying blues singer in "Good Night, Sweet Blues," Robert Redford as a Polish mill worker's college educated son whose homecoming is marred by tragedy in "First Class Mouliak," Robert Duvall as a heroin addict in "Birdcage on My Foot," Lee Marvin as a French chanteuse's violently possessive manager in "Mon Petit Chou," and an unrecognizable Martin Sheen as a psychotic gang member in "And the Cat Jumped Over the Moon" (with James Caan as a former gang member trying to go straight). That's Burt Reynolds in a bit part as a small Texas town hood in "Skinny Kid." Here's hoping they roll out Season Three soon. I can't wait to get on the road again. --Donald Liebenson Now you can own all 32 episodes of season two of this treasured television classic, digitally remastered for the highest quality picture and audio possible in the original, full frame 4.3 aspect ratio.

Famous for its catchy Nelson Riddle theme song, intriguing characters, top-drawer writing and stellar guest star appearances, Route 66 was one of the most highly rated shows of the era, establishing the Corvette as an American icon.

Filmed in locations from coast to coast, the adventures continue for Tod Stiles (Martin Milner), an intellectual who has led a privileged and sheltered life, and Buz Murdock (George Maharis), a tough young man, raised in Hell's Kitchen, struggling his entire life just to survive.

The duo encounter folks good and bad even chance encounters with love in shipyards, chicken farms, cattle ranches, rodeos, hospitals, courtrooms, hotels, amusement parks, wrestling rings, religious retreats and wild animal parks.

Guest starring in the sophomore season is a renowned list of stars, including Robert Redford, Douglas Fairbanks, Robert Duvall, Suzanne Pleshette, Lon Chaney Jr., John Astin, James Caan, Lee Marvin, Martin Sheen, Ed Asner, DeForest Kelley, Marion Ross, Peter Graves, Jack Warden, Tuesday Weld and Julie Newmar, among others. One special episode features several of Maharis relatives.
